Top Chef Winner Kristen Kish Comes Out! (PHOTO)
Top Chef Season 10 winner Kristen Kish knows her way around a I did have a long-term girlfriend, but we haven't been together in a while. Top Chef -- Stefan Richter's exit interview really went down during the challenge, as well as his relationship with the much-missed Kristen. Stefan Richter (born July 2, ) is a chef from Finland, who has resided for many years in Santa Monica, California. He was a runner-up in the fifth season of Top Chef, Bravo's cooking competition show. Richter also competed in Top Chef (season 10). lost Last Chance Kitchen to the eventual Top Chef winner Kristen Kish.
It felt really good to me and obviously I've met incredible friends and it started to feel like a second home to me. Are there a couple locations for the restaurant that you're currently weighing? Brooks is on the front lines right now in Charleston. I'm still traveling a lot. We're in contact and he's hitting the ground running and we're in touch remotely constantly during the day.
We're in that stage of once that space happens, that's our next step. What's the plan on that? I sold my condo in Boston. Technically I'm homeless by the end of April.
That being said, I do have a lot of travel on my plate for other work projects. The Dish: "Top Chef" winner Kristen Kish
We're playing that one by ear. It's all dependent on finding that space. Brooks is known for creating unique places, Leon's, and of course, Saint Alban before it closed. He's got an interesting vision, so how are you guys creating your own vision together and can you tell me what we can expect from your restaurant? The way Brooks and I are operating, we were careful about. I think what Brooks and his partners have done is they've created amazing places, but nothing feels like it's all under one umbrella.
They all feel very independent from each other and very separate and all carry their own vibe. Mine will be very different from Leon's and Saint Albans. I'm going to bring in what I hope is, I don't want to say minimalist, but more feminine touches perhaps. Less heavy, very clean and very similar to my food. It's not pretentious, it doesn't feel fancy or precious, but it feels polished. That's my approach in food. Although something could look very rich and luxurious, you're gonna realize when you come in, it's beautiful, it's aesthetically pleasing, but don't be afraid to drop shit on the floor.
Can you give me any idea or a word of to describe the genre of your the cuisine? It's playful, it's a little whimsical, but at the core, it's all based on classic technique and perfectionism. Trust me, I dip my spoon into a sauce a million times and I look at it two inches from my eye to see how the grains are settling. Those are the little details I like to pride myself on. But as a guest and a diner, you're not going to necessarily know I did that.
I don't want you to because then it'll make you feel like it's too fancy. It's those things I take pride in, that fuel my creativity, and make me very happy at the end of the day. White tablecloth or not? The table itself will be very beautiful, there will be no tablecloth covering it up.

Working with new people. I can work faster and under pressure, sure, but being able to work with new people everyday and people you don't know very well, that's a skill I can take wherever I go. You had an amazing run on Last Chance Kitchen, which led to your ultimate victory. How stressful was that experience?
20 questions with 'Top Chef' winner and future Charleston restaurant owner Kristen Kish | Eat
Having to take a break from Top Chef and not knowing if I would make it back in was very stressful. But it seemed a bit more relaxed. You can look at it one of two ways: I tried to take a relaxed approach regardless of whether I got kicked off and I had a great time. Do you remember the dish that landed you in LCK?
It was a combination of the Restaurant Wars challenge. The things I was in charge of I just couldn't get my concept across to people. It was taking classic French dishes and putting my spin on it. I would never open up a restaurant like that but being on the show and narrowing it down would be a good way to show my creativity.
Have you gone back to master any dish from the competition after the show? When I think of new dishes for the menu and "real life," I like to put a bit more thought into them. Being in Massachusetts, I'm thinking seasonally and what I have available. I woke up one day and decided it was not for me.
I moved to Michigan to find myself. A lot of it was from suppressing myself being gay. I grew up with an amazing family accepting everything, but this was my own struggle being different. Where did you meet your current girlfriend? I am sort of dating. I did have a long-term girlfriend, but we haven't been together in a while.
Talk about coming out. I was dating a woman. She lived in New York and I lived in Boston.
We met in Charleston for our one year anniversary. I posted a picture to share the moment. It was not my goal to come out. A day after that a New York Times article came out that had done a profile on me and my former boss. It casually mentioned my girlfriend.
I didn't think that people cared. I had already came out to my close friends and family, so that part was fine. I received nothing but amazing messages. That is when life takes off, when you can openly be who you are. You weren't out of the closet on Top Chef?
I didn't talk about anything. The only time I mentioned our relationship was saying, "I just got out of a relationship. Being gay on Top Chef is usually mentioned so casually because the theme is focused on food.
How were you cast on the Bravo show? My former boss, Barbara Lynch. She was a guest judge on the season before. They had asked her if she knew any chefs, primarily female, that she could suggest for Top Chef. She came back and told me she had put my name in.
I was happy and cooking back then. I had no desire to go on that show. I had watched the show before and saw how critical it was, so didn't want to go. She made me go.
Was it stressful winning yourself back into the competition through Last Chance Kitchen? I was so tired and needed a break.

Once that wore off I wanted to win. I got a little fire under my ass and did it. It actually took off a lot of stress, cooking in that environment, because it was one dish. I only had to focus on that one thing against one person.
